DIY Geometric Animal String Art

In the past year or so, string art has been popping up in almost every home decor store. Though cute, these pieces can leave a hole in your bank account and in the end, not worth it. So today, I will be showing you how to make a DIY version of these designs.

Needed Supplies:

  • A piece of cardstock paper (or a painting canvas)
  • Needle
  • Thread (any color)
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Animal picture

Step One:

First, pick the animal that you would like to use and find an geometric image of it.                          Search: geometric (your animal)

I choose a fox for my design. Then print it on print on normal printer paper.

Step Two:

Line the animal print out with carstock paper and tape. If using a canvas, tape in the center. Check to make sure image is secure

Step Three:

Using a needle, poke holes where the lines are either crossed or stop.

Step Four:

Remove animal picture, but DO NOT throw away. You will need the picture as a reference.

Step Five:

Thread a needle and cut at a decent length (note: you do not want this to be too long or else it will be hard to sew/thread). Starting from back to front, thread string until there is about a quarter of an inch on back side. Tape it down securely.  Continue to thread going back to front for each stitch by following the design of your animal image. If you run out of string, pull taught and tape secure on back and start a new thread.

Step Six:

When finished, cut and tape string taut to ensure your design. If preferred, you can hide the messy backside by gluing or taping a second piece of cardstock paper to it.

This simple DIY is an easy and affordable solution to keeping your home in style and cute.
